Prosperity Point: Inspire Yourself

While we all have our own opinions of what makes a "good" person, there are some qualities we can probably agree on. Honesty. Compassion. Responsibility. These are outwardly-visible qualities. We know someone has them, because they're evident in that person's dealings with us.

Here's another one. Integrity. Harder to define maybe, because it's always not so apparent. Integrity is about being true to yourself. Your word, your beliefs, your values. It's about choosing this truth over expediency, doing what's right over doing what's easy. And just to make it harder, it's doing it all even when no one else knows. That's what makes integrity such a rare quality. As far as many people are concerned, they can get away without it.

For many of us, our societies don't place a high value on integrity. Our politicians sway with the winds of public opinion. Our athletes alter their bodies with illegal drugs. When the high-profile among us are so cavalier with their principles, it's easy, even natural, for the rest of us to follow suit. It becomes expected. The norm. We call ourselves honest, but we cheat on our taxes. We tell our children to obey the law, but we use radar detectors to avoid speeding tickets.

Fortunately there are other examples to follow. We have of course just lost one in John Paul II. Maybe we don't agree with his stands. But we can respect the courage he had in his convictions, both in the role he played in such issues as the fall of communism and in his leadership of the Catholic Church. Given that he never courted popularity for its own sake, perhaps even he would be surprised at the throngs that filled Rome to say goodbye. His integrity was part of what underpinned his ability to inspire.

What, you ask, does all this have to do with our work on manifesting abundance? When you read these books, absorb these ideas, blend the authors' thoughts with your own, you make a promise to yourself. This makes sense, you say, and it's good for me. This is it, this time I make it happen. And once you've made this internal commitment, what happens if you don't keep it?

If we've only promised ourselves, we're not letting anybody else down. There's nobody to think any less of us. So we rationalize it away, that it doesn't matter.

There's where staying in integrity comes into play. Every time you break a promise to yourself, you erode your self-confidence, the same as you'd lose confidence in some else who broke promises to you. You chip away at your own belief that you can and will do what you say you're going to do, and you make it easier to let yourself off the hook the next time as well. Maybe no one else sees, but you see. You know. You remember.

So what do you have to do? Follow through. None of this happens without action. Every skyscraper began as a thought, but it materialized with the action that thought produced. Every lottery winner had to buy a ticket! So it will be with our success. The books we read give us guidelines for manifesting what we want, but they don't do the job themselves. If you are to have the abundance you want and deserve, do what you know you need to do. If you are to be a person of integrity, keep those promises you make to yourself.
